Reflective Statement:
Illustration Sketchbooks 1 - Final ReflectionsI was very keen to take Illustration Sketchbooks because keeping a sketchbook regularly has always been a challenge for me and yet was something I’ve always wanted to do.
Starting the unit by using different art supplies, making my own sketchbooks and learning binding techniques was a real highlight for me. I enjoyed the process and the exercises helped me to explore different ways of sketching that I perhaps wouldn’t have tried on my own. Trying the different mediums I’ve been surprised how I’ve taken to watercolours and ink pen.
Keeping a sketchbook was quite hard at times, sketching people in public really challenged my skills and confidence. This was reflected in my drawings and although I liked the idea of sketching people, in practice it was much harder to do. My focus on capturing likeness got in the way of my enjoyment and my lack of perspective skills showed. Despite this, looking back I am pleased with some of the people sketches, especially the ones created at the market. Here I saw humor coming out and adding narrative to them added another layer of enjoyment for me.
Being more playful gave me a chance to be more creative and experimental, which is something I tend to shy away from. I enjoyed the process and was pleased with the end results which has given me some confidence to do this more often. I wasn’t sure how my work was developing during the course but by part 5 I really saw everything coming together and could see themes emerging in my work overall.
After reviewing everything I have learnt on this unit, I realise that I have come away from it not just having experimented a lot but that I now have a tool kit of ideas of different ways to sketch. I can use my sketchbooks to help me develop my illustrations into stronger pieces and also to document my life. I’ve learnt so much, not just from my own work but from all the different artists researched. My knowledge of the different types of illustration is expanding and I am learning which types I enjoy and which ones aren’t a good fit. Seeing how other artists approach their sketchbooks was very interesting, I learnt some tips about visual research processes and techniques to try.
I will now approach my own sketchbooks in new ways using my toolkit of techniques and influences. At this point my sketchbooks have definitely become more important to me and I am using them more than I did before. I am looking forward to working on this relationship, developing my visual language, drawing skills and a new habit of keeping a regular sketchbook.
Full statement is also available on my G-Drive.
